Hanna-Maria is "Athletic of the Year 2003" in Finland. She was also awarded as "Sportwoman of the Year 2003". Additionally, she was voted as the public's favorite. The gala took place in Tampere. Hanna-Maria's personal coach, Mirjami Seppälä was also awarded as "Coach of the Year 2003" in Finland.

Hanna-Maria did again a new Finnish national record in 100m freestyle. She won the race in Espoonlahti (Finnish Open Grand Prix) with an excellent new record 53,51. She improved her previous record by 0,54 seconds.

Hanna-Maria is the world champion in 100m freestyle. This is the first time ever a Finnish woman wins the title of world champion in the swimming sport. She won the competition all the way from the prelims to the finals. Her time in the heats was 54,82, in the semi-finals 54,48 and in the finals 54,37. The semi-final time was the new Finnish national record, and she was able to improve that one more time in the finals. Hanna-Maria says "everything went as it was planned; during this spring, I have been able to improve in the last 50m. I guess that has been the key to my success".
Two other Finnish national records was also updated in 50m freestyle by Hanna-Maria. She has now 49 national records all together. Her position in 50m freestyle semi-final was 10th with the time 25,39. Hanna-Maria did her own personal best in 50m backstroke (29,43). In the semi-finals her time was 29,64 and her position was 16th. She also swam 100m backstroke well and the position in the end was 21th with the time 1.03,16.

New national record in Finnish national championship held in Turku. This was the second time (in 50m pool) Hanna-Maria improved the national record in 200m freestyle. She won the race with the time 2.01,64, upgrading the previous record with 0,36 seconds. In addition to 200m freestyle, she also swam and won 50m & 100m freestyle, 200m medley and 50m backstroke. She made her own personal record in 200m medley with the time 2.19,51. Hanna-Maria also swam 4*100m medley and 4*100m freestyle relay with Mona Paavilainen, Tiia Sievilä and Pipsa Tuura. They were 3th in 4*100m freestyle and 2th in 4*100m medley.

Hanna-Maria swam the world best time of the season (2003) in 100m freestyle. The time was 54,50, a new Finnish national record and her 45th Finnish record all in all. It is less than one month when she last time improved the national record (in Athens 54,86).
18.05.2003 - New national record again in Athens
Hanna-Maria did again a new Finnish national record in 100m freestyle. She won the race in Athens (Acropolis Meet) with an excellent new record 54,86. She improved the record by 0,86 seconds.
17.05.2003 - New national records in Athens
Hanna-Maria swam three new Finnish national records in Athens (Acropolis Meet). Yesterday she was able to beat her own record in the prelims of 50m freestyle. The new record (25,79) lasted only one day since today she managed to update the record in the finals. She won the 50m freestyle with the new record 25,62. She also upgraded the Finnish national record in 200m freestyle. She swam 2.02,00 in the prelims and improved the record by 0,97 seconds. See the results and other information of the Acropolis Meet .
